Lesson 3 of 4
In Progress

2. Early Baroque

The Baroque period lasted from approximately 1600 to 1750, which is the year Johann Sebastian Bach died. The term Baroque seems to have been related to the Portuguese word used for a pearl used in jewelry. This is appropriate, for the Baroque era is one of the most ornamented periods in all of music.

It seems to fit well with the beautifully decorated palaces of Europe filled with finely wrought furniture, highly polished and gilt with gold and silver. Everything seems well balanced and filled with exquisitely designed inventions.

You will quickly notice the difference in sound between the Renaissance and Baroque. Although many countries contributed to Baroque music, it was Italy where Baroque music received its basic form. That is where we will begin.
