Before you begin this first episode, note a few things:
The series was filmed in the mid-1970’s, so the film style is going to be pretty different to you. There are lots of sudden jump cuts, unusual zooms, close angles, big microphones, etc. 50 years separate you from Francis Schaeffer, and although that’s actually a good thing, it’s going to take some getting used to. You may even want to chuckle when you see certain things – that’s fine; laugh it out so you can get back to hearing what he is saying. It’s worth it.
Francis Schaeffer wears unusual clothes. Don’t be shocked when you see him walking through the streets of a city wearing knickers. He took on the style of clothing from the mountains of Switzerland where he was living, which means it looks like he’s stepping out of the 19th century. It’s pretty quirky, but then it was also quirky back then – it’s just who he was. You’ll have to get used to it. 🙂
The opening images of this video can be a little shocking because they are real news footage. If you’re bothered by these sorts of images, just fast-forward the video to timecode 1:05 when he starts talking.
It may take a little bit to get used to him, but he will grow on you: there is a lot we can learn from him.
