Jonathan Rogers will guide students on a journey to learn how to improve their own creative writing by examining Tolkien’s literary elements in The Hobbit. Part of the Creative Writing with Jonathan Rogers series.
Join author and professor Jonathan Rogers as he guides students through a creative exploration of Tolkien’s The Hobbit. By analyzing literary techniques from Tolkien’s classic, students learn practical skills to significantly enhance their creative writing.
Students will:
- Master characterization by examining distinct voices, such as Gollum’s unique grammatical style.
- Learn how to effectively use narrative distance, shifting from distant to close narration for compelling storytelling.
- Explore how individual scenes set up and solve key plot puzzles.
- Discover ways to integrate various genres—like travel writing—into their creative narratives.

Jonathan Rogers, PhD
Jonathan Rogers is the author of The Terrible Speed of Mercy, one of the finest biographies of Flannery O’Connor we’ve ever read. His other books include the Wilderking Trilogy–The Bark of the Bog Owl, The Secret of the Swamp King, and The Way of the Wilderking–as well as The World According to Narnia and a biography of Saint Patrick. He has spent most of his adult life in Nashville, Tennessee, where he and his wife Lou Alice are raising a houseful of robustious children. He is featured in Grammar for Writers and Creative Writing.
