Read all of The Odyssey by Richard Lattimore.
Richard Lattimore also did an excellent translation of The Iliad, Homer’s poem that precedes the Odyssey. If you’ve never read The Odyssey before in any version, you may want to read the attached introduction Lattimore wrote to The Iliad before you read The Odyssey. This provides the background story to The Odyssey. However, if you do know the story of Odysseus, you can read this introduction at any time while you’re reading The Odyssey.
