Great Reference Works
There are many good, conservative Bible reference works in print and online. Here are links to three choices. The dictionary is the best one-stop reference for students; the others are for deeper study.
Bible Dictionary
The ‘Holman Bible Dictionary’ provides general definitions and background information for people, places, and things in the Bible. A great reference work for study.
Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary – Print
Holman Bible Dictionary – Online
“The product of over 6 years of work by hundreds of people, the Holman Bible Dictionary manages to be readable and easy to use, yet take advantage of the finest modern Bible scholarship without heavy technical language. The over 6,600 entries includes extensive cross-referencing of related articles, and quotes from 6 different Bible translations.”
Bible Encyclopedia
The ‘International Standard Bible Encyclopedia’ provides more in-depth studies of people, places, and things in the Bible. An excellent way to dig deeper into the Bible. (Please note that this can be rather technical.)
International Standard Bible Encyclopedia
“This encyclopedia, written in 1915, was published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. Hailed for its authoritative explanation of every significant word, person and place, it is the standard by which all other biblical encyclopedias are measured.”
Old Testament Commentary Series
The ‘Keil and Delitzsch’ Old Testament Commentary examines each verse or section of the Old Testament. As a commentary, it provides the most in-depth look at specific verses in the Bible.
Keil & Delitzsch Old Testament Commentary
“A triumph of rigorous scholarship and sound theological judgement, Keil & Delitzsch is a classic in conservative biblical scholarship and remains one of the most popular Old Testament commentaries available. Beginning with the nature and format of the Old Testament, this evangelical commentary introduces each book of the Old Testament, and offers in-depth analyses of the Hebrew text as well as grammatical and philological issues.”
