Here are the books we will study this year, listed in the order to be read. We will be studying a Shakespeare play and some short stories in the spring.

  • Johnny Tremain by Esther Hoskins Forbes
  • The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
  • Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt
  • The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom
  • A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
  • Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie
  • The Fellowship of the Ring by JRR Tolkien
  • Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare

Here are the Poems and Short Stories we will be reading this year.

There will be a short writing assignment given each week. Instead of writing assignments coming from our literature selections, there is a very easy way students / parents who are participating on video only can keep up with the writing assignments. Because one hour a week is just too short to do a thorough literature discussion AND writing instruction, I will use Writing and Rhetoric.

Each student needs to have their own Writing and Rhetoric book as a guide for instruction. Parents will need the Teacher’s Edition which provides a clear rubric to grade each writing assignment. In the second semester, we will begin Book 10.  It is a very comprehensive, step-by-step guide.

Although Book 10 is not needed until the second semester, I recommend getting both now as they are sometimes backordered.

The last thing you will need throughout the year are these two documents:

  1. Blank Story Chart
  2. Conflict Theme Lit Devices

They can be found in the Course Materials zip file on the Materials section of the course home page. Your student will want to print out multiples copies and have them ready for each class period.
