The first time I took a look at Roget’s Thesaurus, I was intrigued by the organization but quickly got lost. For years, I have been recommending a much more user-friendly resource to my students, The Synonym Finder by J.I. Rodale. I forget who originally recommended this resource, but I am still grateful.

Use the book just like a dictionary: find the word you want to replace, and over 1,000,000 synonyms are at your fingertips. Glance up or down to find other parts of speech, i.e. from “compete” to “competitor” or “competition”.

Give is a preview on Google Books. Used copies abound on places like betterworldbooks or thriftbooks. Grab a hardcover—it will get lots of use!

I really like Thesauruses! They are so helpful, especially when trying to write something meaningful and descriptive.
