VL1 – Ch 16 Quiz

Can you please help me answer the question “but why” when I corrected my daughter’s quiz for numbers 36 through 45? She is in 6th grade and we are taking the class slow but she really enjoys it and I want to continue to help her enjoy it. Unfortunately I couldn’t answer her question after spending some time to refresh my own memory ( we watch the videos together) and I don’t want to just power through and her not understand this foundation piece.

Hi Megan,

The answer to “Why” is “The Romans said so…”😆

Basically, prepositions each have their own case that “completes” or “satisfies” the preposition. “ad” as a preposition always has “accusative” as its object. “sub” always takes the ablative. This really helps one read a Latin sentence and identify prepositional phrases once one gets a handle on case endings.

Here’s a list that breaks down more than you’ve covered in Lesson 16 so far.

Does that help? You could present it to your daughter the same way you treat idioms in English.
